Udupi, May 3, 2026: A rare hero stone (Veeragallu) depicting a deer hunt has been discovered at Vakwadi village in Kundapura taluk of Udupi district.

Unlike most hero stones that commemorate deaths in battle or acts of valour, this unique stone portrays a hunting scene involving deer, making it a significant archaeological find.

Rare Deer Hunt Hero Stone

The discovery was made during an archaeological exploration conducted by the Adima Kala Trust at Vakwadi, around 35 km from Udupi, following a request from local resident Kavita Kulal. The stone, measuring about four feet in height, was found within the premises of a house in the village.

According to noted archaeologist and Adima Kala Trust founder Prof T Murugeshi, the hero stone is divided into three panels, each depicting a sequence related to hunting activities.

The lower panel shows two warriors accompanied by hunting dogs, while the middle panel features two deer, one of which appears to have been struck in the neck by a weapon.

The upper panel depicts a Shiva Linga placed on a pedestal, flanked by two seated warriors in a posture of reverence. A Dravidian-style temple tower has also been carved above the figures.

Archaeologists said the rare depiction makes the hero stone an important addition to the region’s historical and cultural heritage.
