Mangalore : Workshop on ‘Human Rights Advocacy’ inaugurated

Mangalore, Mar 21, 2013  :  Society on its part has a very important role to play in protecting human rights, said Western Range IGP Pratap Reddy.

Speaking after inaugurating a workshop on ‘Human Rights Advocacy’ organised by the Department of Political Science, St Aloysius College here on March 20, Wednesday, he said law alone cannot guarantee protection of human rights and it is the utmost duty of each and every individual in the society to work towards protection of human rights.

 

 

On the police department and protection of human rights,  he said  the department has not been able to meet the expectations of the people as far as protecting human rights and added the greatest impediment has been the Police Act of 1861 which is not yet amended even 60 years after independence. There is a need to place forth demand for reforms and unless, he added.

Fr Swebert D’Silva, Principal of St Aloysius College, presided over the function and expressed his regret over the increasing number of cases of human rights violations in the society.

Dr Vivian Lord from University of North Carolina gave a key-note address on ‘Women and criminal justice.’
