Mangalore, Nov 18, 2011: A person of North Indian origin, who had an office in Salafi Centre, Kankanady, stands accused of attempting to cheat students by posing as the personal assistant of Mamatha Banerjee, the former union railway minister, and promising them jobs. With the help of two associates, he planned to cheat each student of at least Rs. 3 lakh.
The man had been running the racket for the past 3 – 4 weeks. Reportedly, he sold job application forms to students for Rs. 1000 each and said that they will have to write a railway examination. He had managed to dupe 500 students into purchasing the application form and had sent some of them text messages on what they should do next.
The students, most of whom were girls, paid the fees and the trickster did not provide receipts for the same.
Someone got suspicious and approached the police, and based on his complaint, the police arrived at 3:30 p.m. today and arrested the trio. The case is currently under investigation.
The students were informed that there were a number of vacant posts that they could try for. The trickster planned to collect a total of Rs. 3 lakh from each job aspirant before fleeing from the scene.
The police are also trying to find out if he really has any connection with Mamatha Banerjee.
