Basavaraj Horatti resigns as Karnataka Legislative Council chairman

Bengaluru, Aug. 7, 2026: Karnataka Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti resigned from his post on Friday amid the threat of a no-confidence motion against him.

Horatti, a BJP leader, confirmed that his resignation had been accepted after he met Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. “I was asked to resign, so I tendered my resignation,” he said, adding that he did not know the reason for the directive to step down.

His resignation came a day after he agreed to quit, paving the way for the ruling Congress to have one of its lawmakers preside over the Legislative Council.

Horatti had said on Thursday that the ruling party had asked him to resign and that Shivakumar had spoken to him twice over the phone. He said the Chief Minister had called him for a personal meeting on Wednesday and informed him that the Congress high command had directed him to step down.

According to Horatti, Shivakumar had also told him that the Congress would move a no-confidence motion if he refused to resign.

The Congress has nominated senior legislator Saleem Ahmed for the post of Legislative Council chairman, while former minister Umashree has been named its candidate for deputy chairperson.
