Mangalore, April 26, 2013: The Mangalore Police have unearthed a major human trafficking racket and have arrested five persons in this connection on the charges of trying to traffick as many as 93 people mostly women and children to Australia via sea route.They were all found in a lodge at Belthangady.
The arrested are Dorington (40), Nikson Darvin (38), of Tiruvallur in Tamil Nadu, Tavarassa (46) of Srilanka, Kannan(31) of Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu and Karthikeyan(40) of Mandappuram in Tamil Nadu. Of these Tavarassa was an accused in the case of the unearthing of a human trafficking racket in the city in September 2012.
The five were arrested by the police following a tip off that they were to ferry Srilankan Tamil refugees to Australia on the promise of a job, after collecting as much as Rs one lakh from each of them. Those who were rescued included 29 men, 22 women, 18 boys and 19 girls.
It is learnt, the arrested persons had provided an advance of Rs 2 lakhs after striking a deal to purchase a boat from one Chandranath of Udyavar near Manjeshwar for Rs 18 lakhs.
A cash of Rs 25,940, five mobile phones and two ID cards of Tamil refugees were seized. The accused as well as the rescued people are Srilankan refugees. The operation was jointly conducted by CCB, Coastal Security Police, District Crime Investigation Bureau and Belthangady police.
