kazi death Mangalore, July 24: The CBI, which probed the mysterious death of C. M. Abdulla Moulavi, the qazi of Mangalore, has submitted a report suggested that the qazi committed suicide.

Initially, the local police tried investigating the case, after which the crime branch investigated for six months before it was finally handed over to the CBI. The CBI report says that there is no evidence indicating murder.

The qazi was found dead near a large rock by the seaside in Chembirikka in Kasargod in the wee hours of Feb 15, 2010. His sandals and walking stick were found nearby. The local police investigated the case for 16 days and came to the conclusion that the qazi had committed suicide. The police had found a note about death in the qazi’s diary. Shortly before his death, the qazi had purchased a new lock for his room and had visited his father’s burial place by climbing 30 steps a day before his death.

The note found in the qazi’s diary was a Malayalam translation of a few lines on death from the book Burda Baith. Although the police reached this conclusion, they did not make it public, fearing public reaction. The crime branch, which re-investigated the case, conducted a dummy test at the place where the qazi’s body was found and came to the same conclusion. The case was then handed over to the CBI.

According to the CBI report, the qazi was physically and mentally weak because of health problems such as cancer of the liver, and so on. He had tried taking treatment at a number of places, but in vain. Finally, he committed suicide, states the CBI report.

However, there are theories that state that the aged and sick qazi could not possibly climb to the top of the rock to jump into the sea, adding that a scholar like him did not have the need to commit suicide. The local police have also been accused of attempting to write off the qazi’s death as suicide to protect the interests of certain people.
