Kaup, September 4, 2025: In a shocking case of alleged child trafficking, police in Kaup taluk have arrested three people after a newborn baby girl was reportedly sold for ₹4.5 lakh and handed over illegally to a couple posing as her parents.
The incident surfaced when Prabhavati and her husband Ramesh Moolya of Kallugudde, Heruru village, took a four-day-old infant to a local Anganwadi to register her on the Poshan Tracker, a government nutrition and child welfare platform. The Anganwadi worker grew suspicious of inconsistencies in their account, prompting further inquiry.
Investigations revealed the child was born on August 3 at a private hospital in Mangaluru to an unmarried woman. Police said Prabhavati and Ramesh acquired the baby through contacts at the hospital, allegedly paying ₹4.5 lakh. Prabhavati’s cousin, Priyanka, had tipped her off about the woman’s delivery.
Based on the complaint, Shirva police registered a case and arrested Dr. Somesh Solomon, Vijayalakshmi alias Vijaya, and Navneet Narayan. All three reportedly confessed and have been remanded to judicial custody.
Authorities are probing whether a wider trafficking network is operating through private hospitals and said more arrests may follow.
