Grand procession marks beginning of 20th Alva’s Virasat

Moodbidri, Jan 6, 2012 : The 20th Alva’s Virasat was inaugurated before a huge audience at Shobhavana in Mijar on Jan 5 Wednesday.

A grand procession, in which Padmashree Pandith Ajoy Chakrabarthy was carried in a grandly decorated palanquin, marked the beginning of this 4-day cultural event. The procession also comprised teams of kahale artistes, chende artistes, and women carrying decorated pots.

Delivering the welcome address, Dr. M. Mohan Alva, the chairman of Alva’s Education Foundation, said that the objective of Alva’s Virasat is to create cultural awareness among people.

Accepting the prestigious Alva’s Virasat Award 2012, Padmashree Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarthy expressed his joy and said that he has been teaching music to school children for the past 15 years. He also delighted the audience by reciting three Vedic mantras.

Chief guest Dr. N. Vinay Hegde said that Dr. Mohan Alva is not only concerned with the academic progress of his pupils, but also their artistic development.

Dr. Veerendra Heggade, the dharmadhikar of Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala, said in his presidential address that the objective of Alva’s Virasat is to enable the formation of value-based human beings. He expressed his appreciation of Dr. Alva for creating an audience appreciative of art and for forming students interesting in organizing artistic and cultural events.

The cultural program commenced at 7:15 p.m. with a unique violin concert by Ganesh and Kumaresh of Chennai accompanied by Vidwan Patri Sathish Kumar on mrudangam and Tanjavoor Govindarajan on tavil. Nishan E. Khalsa of Punjab presented Punjabi bhangra and folk dances from 8:45 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Among the prominent personalities present were MLA Abhayachandra Jain, A. J. Shetty, MLC Captain Ganesh Karnik, Canara Bank Deputy MD Dattaiah, Jayaram Bhat of Karnataka Bank, N. Balakrishna of Prakruthi Developers in Bangalore, and many others.
