Speaking about the hike in the prices of essential commodities, he said that UPA government might say that it has incurred a loss of Rs 20 crore, but it is not thinking about the daily loss of Rs 150 each poor family is incurring as a result of the price hike. He accused the state and the central governments of attempting to eliminate poor people instead of poverty.

Recalling that the BJP had plans to call for a nationwide bundh on July 1 or July 2, he said that the party decided to support the Left parties because it did not have the power to organize it on its own. He also informed that the central and the state governments do not have any power on petroleum products because all the power on the same are reserved for private companies, which will increase the prices without giving any notice.

Although many people feel that the fuel price hike affects vehicle owners alone, they do not realize that fuel price hike lead to increase in the price of all essential commodities including rise in the fares of auto rickshaws and buses, he said. Stressing that the CPI does not have any enmity with the union government unlike the BJP, he said that the CPI had to call for a bundh in order to support the poor and provide justice for them.

General Secretary of the State Beedi Workers’ Federation Comrade B. Vishwanath Naik said that a number of problems are in store for beedi workers because the government has made several changes in the pensions of beedi workers.
