E20 Petrol can cut fuel economy by 2–6%: Nitin Gadkari

New Delhi, Jul 31, 2026: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said that petrol blended with 20 per cent ethanol (E20) may reduce fuel efficiency by 2–6 per cent in certain vehicles designed for E10 fuel, citing studies conducted by government agencies and automobile manufacturers.

In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Gadkari said that a vehicle’s mileage also depends on several factors, including driving conditions, driving habits, and maintenance.

Most petrol cars and two-wheelers manufactured between 2010 and 2023 were designed to run on E10 fuel, which contains up to 10 per cent ethanol. The introduction of E20 petrol has sparked concerns and protests, particularly among owners of vehicles not specifically designed for the higher ethanol blend.

The minister said the transition to E20 was implemented only after successful validation of fuel systems, engine durability, drivability, material compatibility, emissions performance, and consumer acceptance.

He added that E20 fuel offers a higher octane rating, better anti-knock properties, cleaner combustion, smoother engine performance, improved acceleration, and reduced carbon emissions.

Gadkari also said that studies conducted by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Indian Oil Corporation, the Indian Institute of Petroleum, and vehicle manufacturers found no abnormal wear and tear or significant performance variation in legacy vehicles using E20 fuel.
