Udupi, Oct 2, 2012: Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar inaugurated the newly constructed Town Hall in Udupi on Oct 1, Monday.

In his inaugural address, he acknowledged the role played by late J. H. Patel, former chief minister, in separating Udupi from DK, owing to which Udupi could get its own Town Hall.

Lauding Udupi, he said that the temple town is famous not only in Karnataka, but also in India, adding that the city municipal council has bagged three state and national awards and also the Best CMC Award.

Expressing his appreciation of the Udupi GPs, he said that the GPs of Mangalore and Udupi are excellent when compared to the GPs of North Karnataka. The fact that Udupi collects maximum tax illustrates that its people are well-aware of the system, he said.

Further, he said that, when he was the speaker in 2008 – 09, he had told the then CM Yeddyurappa that a special grant ought to be earmarked for the development of any district. Yeddyurappa immediately earmarked Rs. 1,720 crore for the development of various districts, and Udupi got a share of Rs. 30 crore, which it has well utilized for development projects in the form of plastic ban, four-lane roads, and 24/7 water supply.

Stating that the state government has given a lot to Udupi, he promised more in future too. Simultaneously, the CM said that the state expects the central government to grant funds too, adding that a request has already been made to the centre in this regard.

CM Shettar inaugurated the Bhujanga Park worth Rs. 1 crore, unveiled a bust of Karamballi Sanjeeva Shetty at Ambagilu Junction, laid the foundation stone for the four-lane work at Kalsanka worth Rs. 26.5 crore, inaugurated an SC/ST hostel worth Rs. 2 crore and a girl’s hostel worth Rs. 1.35 crore, launched an information centre worth Rs. 1.5 crore, and inaugurated four police department complexes worth Rs. 1 crore. He inaugurated the Town Hall after inaugurating all the above.

Speaking on the occasion, MLA Raghupathi Bhat expressed his gratitude to Mr. Shettar for everything he did when he was the revenue minister. Mr. Shettar played a major role in converting 50 acres of land in Malpe into habitable land so that it could be used for the rehabilitation of 500 fishermen’s families, he explained.

Udupi District-in-charge Minister Kota Shrinivas Poojary, CMC President Kiran Kumar, Vice President Bharathi Chandrashekar, DC Dr. M. T. Reju, MP Jayaprakash Hegde, Kaup MLA Lalaji Mendon, SP Dr. Boralingaiah, ZP President Katpady Shankar Poojary, and others were present.
