Mangalore, Jan 23, 2012: Speaking at a protest meeting held in front of the DC’s office on January 23 Monday by the Bajpe Muslim Okkoota and the Pro People Union against the alleged use of lathis by the Bajpe Police against the students of Ansar School in Bajpe on January 16, MLA B. Ramanath Rai declared that several attempts have been made to disturb communal peace in the district.
Referring to alleged provocative speeches delivered by RSS chief Dr. Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat at the Hindu Samajotsava held on January 22 Saturday at Uppinangady, which led to stone pelting and lathi charge, he said that the police should file a charge sheet against Dr. Bhat and arrest him. He also dared CM D. V. Sadananda Gowda to take action against Dr. Bhat.
Okkoota President Mohammed Sharif delivered the welcome and keynote address in which he demanded that Dinakar Shetty, the sub inspector of Bajpe Police Station, must be suspended for using lathis against school children.
It may be recalled that a group of school children protesting against the lack of a speed breaker in front of the school and demanding the immediate construction of one were allegedly beaten with lathis by the Bajpe Police.
Abhayachandra Jain, the MLA of Moodubidri, addressed the gathering and said that the government must take action against the sub inspector as he is responsible for the lathi charge against children. Stating that the sub inspector also assaulted the president of the Gram Panchayat, he said that the Bajpe issue will be introduced in assembly and the government will be pressurized to suspend the sub inspector.
The protestors also submitted a memorandum to the DC.
Congress leaders Vijayakumar Shetty, Bondala Jagannath Shetty, Mithun Rai, Ivan D’Souza, Sucharitha Shetty, Mohiuddin Bava, former mayor Ashraf, and others also participated in the protest.
