All-India workers’ strike: Old port trade hit, roads blocked near clock tower in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Feb 12, 2026: Responding to the call for an All-India general strike by central trade unions, workers in the city joined the protest against the Union government’s move to repeal existing labour laws and implement the four new Labour Codes (Labour Code 2025).

Hamali (head-load) workers at the Old Port wholesale market, one of the city’s key commercial hubs, abstained from work and took part in the strike. The usually bustling market wore a deserted look in the absence of workers. With no labourers available, most traders were unable to carry out business and chose not to open their shops and warehouses. Public movement in the area was also sparse due to the strike.

The Port Workers’ Association extended its support to the strike and held meetings urging workers to participate, making extensive preparations to ensure its success.

Responding positively to the nationwide call, hamali workers of the Old Port joined the protest in large numbers. The strike served as a reminder that even if an employer has the capacity to purchase goods by the tonne, not a single sack can be moved without workers. In what is considered a stronghold of the BJP, workers have delivered a strong message to the Modi government through this strike.
