Mangalore, July 24: Abhishek Das emerged as the champion of the Indian Overseas Bank Fifth Mangalore FIDE Rated Open International Chess Tournament 2011 that came to an end on July 23 Saturday at Radhakrishna Temple Hall on GT Road in Mangalore.

Das beat Konguvel to emerge as the winner. Suvrajit Saha, Shyam Nikhil, and Thejkumar bagged the second place with 9 points each. Laxman beat Ravi Hegde to bag the third place with 8 points. While Shriram Sarja won against Thipsay, the match between Hemant Sharma and Shriram Jha of Delhi ended in a match. 


M. Narendra, the CMD of IOB, the chief guest of the event, distributed prizes among the winners.
The four achievers of Special Olympics 2011, which was held in Athens, Greece—Dhanya S. Rao of Chetana Bala Vikasa Kendra, who won 2 gold medals in the roller skating event; Royston Pinto of St. Agnes Special School who won 1 gold medal in the roller skating event; Anil Mendonca of St. Agnes Special School who won 1 bronze medal in the volley ball event; and Pramila Pinto of Manasa Rehabilitation and Training Centre at Pamboor who won 1 gold medal and 1 bronze medal in the roller skating event, were also felicitated on the occasion. 


N. Yogish Bhat, the deputy speaker; Seemanth Kumar Singh, the Mangalore police commissioner; K. T. Shailaja Bhat, the president of the zilla panchayat, and others were also present. 


Organizing secretary Gururaj delivered the welcome address, and Lydia D’Cunha proposed the vote of thanks.
