Mangalore, Dec 19, 2012: The Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Mangalore on December 19, Wednesday demanding better amenities and a justifiable compensation package to the victims of Endosulfan.
Speaking on the occasion, Kokkada Sridhar Gowda, President of the Anti-Endosulfan Committee said, said the need of the hour was a good rehabilitation and compensation package for the victims of Endosulfan who are made to suffer for no fault of theirs.
He said people in at least 92 villages in Dakshina Kannada district have been affected due to the aerial spray of the deadly pesticide. He strongly condemned the government for dilly dallying to ban Endosulfan when over 73 nations in the world have already banned it.
He said the government has not yet made up its mind to do justice to the Endosulfan victim even when some have chosen to end their lives out of frustration. He also demanded compensation to Endosulfan victims of the state on Kerala model.
State Secretary of the ABVP spoke on the demands put forth by the ABVP to improve the living conditions of Endosulfan victims. Some of the demands enlisted are opening of rehabilitation centres in all affected villages and at least one day care centre for every five villages. The ABVP has also demanded BPL ration cards to the affected families and free higher education to the siblings of Endosulfan affected people. Another demand was to provide free bus passes to families of Endosulfan facilities. The ABVP has even urged for a ban on food colour.
Several ABVP activists took part in the protest.
