14 convicted in 2017 bid to murder Bhaskar Shetty case accused inside Mangaluru prison

Mangaluru, Sep 12, 2026: A Fast Track Court in Mangaluru has convicted 14 accused in connection with the 2017 attempt to murder two undertrial prisoners linked to the sensational Bhaskar Shetty murder case inside the district prison.

The incident occurred on September 11, 2017, when undertrial prisoners Navneeth Shetty and Niranjan Bhat were allegedly attacked while they were walking towards the Superintendent’s office in the new jail building.

According to the prosecution, the accused had conspired to assault the two prisoners with the intention of extorting money. They allegedly demanded Rs 5 lakh and threatened to kill them if they failed to pay.

Navneeth was allegedly attacked with a steel drum and a carrom board. However, another prisoner intervened and prevented further assault.

The accused also allegedly threatened the two men and demanded that they confess to the murder of Navneeth’s father, Bhaskar Shetty. They were also accused of obstructing jail officials who attempted to intervene.

Following the incident, Barke police registered a case under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The court convicted all 14 accused on September 11. Three of them are currently in custody in connection with other cases, while 10 others were taken into custody following the court’s order. One accused was absent during the proceedings.

The court is scheduled to pronounce the sentence on September 16.
