Udupi, September 3, 2011 : Addressing reporters on the sidelines of a preparatory meeting for the state-level Vishwakarma Jayanthyotsava Celebrations, which are scheduled to be held in Mysore on September 17, Akhila Bharatha Vishawakarma Mahasabha President K. P. Nanjudi demanded 3 percent reservation in jobs to people from the Vishwakarma Community.
Further, Nanjudi also demanded political representation for the Vishwakarma Community, based on their population. He also urged the government to make laws to protect gold and silver ornament makers from the police and make it mandatory for the police to interrogate the purchasers of stolen gold and silver ornaments in the presence of the association’s office bearers.
He also said that the government will have to construct sheds for gold and silver craftsmen, provide land and financial assistance to the community’s 67 pontiffs to run educational institutions, declare a holiday on Vishwakarma Jayanthi, and set up a corporation for the development of their community.
Nanjundi said that these demands will be placed before the government during the Vishwakarma Jayanthyotsava, which will be held in Mysore.
CM D. V. Sadananda Gowda, the former PM H. D. Deve Gowda, Opposition Leader Siddaramaiah, and others will participate in the programme.
Alevoor Yogish Acharya, the president of the DK and Udupi Vishwakarma Union; U. T. Khader, the MLA of Ullal; Rajesh Acharya, the president of the Gold and Silver Workers’ Association; and others were also present.
