Belthangady, Jun 5, 2026: A 30-year-old trekker who suffered a leg injury while climbing the steep steps of the popular tourist destination Gadayikallu (Narasimhagad Fort) was rescued after a challenging three-hour operation on June 4.
The injured youth has been identified as Mohammed Sharif (30), a resident of Janata Colony in Thannirupantha village. He had reportedly visited Gadayikallu along with three others, including two women.
While ascending the steep rocky steps leading to the fort, Sharif twisted his leg and was unable to continue due to severe pain. Stranded midway up the hill, his companions immediately alerted the Belthangady Fire and Emergency Services seeking assistance.
Upon receiving the information, personnel from the Fire and Emergency Services, Forest Department, and the Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Shaurya Disaster Management Team rushed to the spot and launched a joint rescue operation.
Continuous rainfall had made the rocky steps extremely slippery, posing a major challenge for rescuers carrying the injured man on a stretcher. Despite the difficult terrain and weather conditions, the rescue teams persevered and successfully brought Sharif down the hill after descending nearly 1,500 steps over a distance of about 1.5 kilometres.
Following the rescue, Sharif was administered first aid and later shifted to the Government Hospital in Belthangady for further treatment. He is reported to be out of danger.
