Udupi: Fisherman drowns after boat capsizes off Malpe coast

Udupi, Sept 12, 2025: A fisherman lost his life after his boat capsized in rough seas near the Malpe lighthouse on Wednesday, September 10.

The deceased has been identified as Rama Kharvi, a resident of Sastana Koditale. Kharvi, who owned the ill-fated boat, had been fishing alone from Malpe harbour for nearly three decades. On Wednesday morning, he set out to sea as usual but failed to return home by afternoon. When attempts by his son to contact him went unanswered, the family, along with relatives and friends, began a search that continued late into the night without success.

On Thursday, September 11, Kharvi’s body was recovered near the Malpe lighthouse. It is suspected that his boat overturned in the strong currents, leaving him unable to swim to safety. The boat, along with its engine, nets and other equipment, was destroyed, causing heavy losses.
