Udupi: FIR registered against BJP MLA Yashpal Suvarna for alleged hate speech

Udupi, Jul 29, 2026: FIR has been registered against Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna at the Udupi Town Police Station for allegedly delivering hate speech during a BJP protest organised against the Congress and CJP near Jathka Stand in Udupi on Tuesday.

The case was registered based on a complaint filed by District Congress president Ashok Kumar Kodavoor. The FIR has been booked under Sections 57, 192, 196(2), 352, 353(2) and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Confirming the development on Wednesday, Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar said that a case had been registered based on the complaint alleging that Yashpal Suvarna made provocative and hate speeches during the protest held against the Congress and CJP within the limits of the Udupi Town Police Station. He said the matter is under investigation.

During the protest, BJP workers raised slogans against the Congress, Rahul Gandhi and the group they referred to as the "Cockroach Party". They also sprayed chemicals on cut-outs depicting Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, actor Prakash Raj and some Opposition leaders whom they alleged had supported the "Cockroach Janata Party". The protesters also smashed the cut-outs with stones.

Speaking at the protest, Yashpal Suvarna had alleged that the demonstration over the NEET question paper leak was not being held in the interest of students but with the support of the Congress, the "Cockroach" group and anti-national forces, including the SDPI, to create unrest in the country.

He had claimed that most of those who participated in the protest at Jantar Mantar were not students and alleged that the truth behind the protests would emerge in the coming days. He also alleged that Rahul Gandhi was trying to gain political mileage by influencing students. Suvarna further accused the Congress of creating tension in society and warned actor Prakash Raj against making what he termed "provocative" remarks during visits to the coastal region.
