Udupi CMC meet - MLA Raghupathi Bhat proposes distribution of flats among homeless

Mangalore Today News Network

Udupi, Nov 30, 2011: Addressing a monthly general meeting of the Udupi Municipality, Raghupathi Bhat, the MLA of Udupi, said that there is not even one inch of land within Udupi Municipality limits, which can be distributed among the homeless. The only option left is to construct multi-storied apartments and distribute flats among the landless, he added.

Mr. Bhat is also the president of the Nagarashraya Committee, which bears the responsibility of distributing land among the landless. He informed that the administration has received more than 1000 applications for lands within Udupi city limits.

He said that the committee has identified land in Kodankooru for the construction of apartments, adding that as many as 240 flats can be constructed on that piece of land. He said that more projects can be taken up after distributing those flats. He said that land cannot be distributed at affordable costs among the landless even if the committee purchases a plot within city limits.

Meanwhile, the AIAWC organized a protest in front of the municipality office demanding land and houses under various government schemes.

Councilor Sandhya S. Nayak complained about an unauthorized multi-storied structure that has been raised in Laxmindra Nagara. In response, Mr. Bhat said that the building would not have been raised if the officials had stopped construction work 3 months back. He urged officials to stop building violations right at the beginning, otherwise, they will approach politicians for influence and politicians will be then forced to use their influence for the sake of votes.

Rammohan, an expert on solid waste management, spoke on producing power from solid waste. He said that TAPMI is willing to purchase the power generated out of solid waste in Udupi.

Prakash Alagawadi, an expert in water management, said that there is a project that can save water and raise water bill collection. Gokuldas Nayak, the CMC commissioner, said that although the municipal pumping centre has a pumping capacity of 25 million liters of water, it can collect bills only for 14 million liters.

Kiran Kumar, the president of the CMC, presided over the meeting.
