Toilet operators collect excess money for usage from Passengers

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Feb 23: Public toilets are meant for the public, but at a cost. At what cost is question? Toilets have been tendered out to maintaining contractors and the fee for using toilets by the public is also decided by the concerned authorities. However the contractors charge at their whims and fancy – at some time very unreasonable. For example, the toilet in KSRTC bus stand is available for public at Rs 5, though the price fixed by the KSRTC is RS 2. No one seems to control the undue advantages by the toilet maintaining contractors.

Passengers boarding buses at the KSRTC bus stand usually get into arguments with public toilet operators who charge excessively for use of the toilet in spite of clear instructions that users can complain against operators who charge excessively. Besides, notices on the toilets indicate that they can be used free of charge.

The public toilet operators force users to pay more. For instance, they charge Rs. 20 – 30 per bath while the actual rates are Rs 5. While users need not pay to use the toilets for urination, they charge Rs. 2.
