Mangalore, Jan 23, 2012 : Vishishtarigaagi Vishishta Mela 2012, a fair for the differently abled, was organized jointly by Asha Jyothi and the Forum of Disabled Children and Parents in the premises of Canara High School on Jan 22 Sunday.
Sabita Monis, a student welfare officer in Alva’s College Moodubidri, was felicitated for securing first class marks in her BA exams, which she answered using her foot. She is now preparing for her KAS exams.
Dhanya Rao, Anil Mendonca, Pramila Pinto, and Royce Pinto, the special kids who won medals at the Special Olympics held in Greece, were honored along with their coaches.
Speaking on the occasion, Sabita Monis said that disability is not a curse. Lamenting that disabled people are treated unfairly, she said that they should be encouraged to enter the main stream of society.
Drum beats, clowns, and two camels, which carried a few disabled kids on their backs, formed the highlights of the event.
C. C. Patil, the woman and child welfare minister, and N. Yogish Bhat, the deputy speaker of the legislative council, visited the mela.
Ajai Kumar, the chairman and MD of Corporation Bank; Dr. U. V. Shenoy, the trustee of Seva Bharathi; Shailaja Bhat, the president of the Zilla Panchayat; Praveen Kumar, the mayor of Mangalore; and Swarna Chittaranjan, the district chairman of Inner Wheel, were also present.
