Sakleshpur to Mangalore road must be strengthened - FKCCI

Mangalore Today News Network

shiradi ghat 2011 nov 11Mangalore, Nov 11, 2011: The Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) demanded that the Shiradi Ghat stretch from Sakleshpur and Mangalore should be strengthened.

Speaking of the economic importance of the region and of the need to safeguard vehicles and passengers, J. R. Bangera, the president of FKCCI, said that the project needs to be taken up on a war footing.

Regarding the economic importance of Mangalore, he said that Mangalore is the only major port in Karnataka and most of the exports/imports take place through this port. He said that the bad roads have made it difficult to access the port, explaining that the movement of heavy trucks along this stretch has damaged it severely.

Stating that vehicle maintenance becomes difficult when vehicles are forced to use bad roads, he said that several tourists find travelling along this stretch to be a nightmare because of the terrible condition it is in.
Urging the state and central governments to take note of this fact, he said that the road needs to be strengthened to boost economic growth in the region. He also demanded that the Mysore to Mangalore highway must be developed soon as it plays an important role in the economic development of both Mangalore and Mysore. This road is used to transport goods to the Mangalore port and is heavily used by tourists too. The 40-km stretch from Mani to Sampaje is full of potholes, making it difficult for transportation to take place and resulting in loss of revenue to DK district, especially in areas of trade, tourism, and industry.

Bangera also said that the government should take this issue seriously because it has scheduled the Global Investors Meet for June 2012.
