Elderly Man Found in Arecanut Plantation Trench Dies After Treatment in Bantwal

Bantwal, Aug. 2, 2026: A 75-year-old man who was found critically injured in a trench inside an arecanut plantation after being missing for three days has succumbed to his injuries despite receiving treatment at multiple hospitals.

The deceased has been identified as Giriyappa Safalya, a resident of Kukkila in Vittal Padnur village.

According to sources, Giriyappa had been missing for three days, prompting local residents to launch an extensive search. On Friday morning, he was found lying helpless inside a water-filled trench in an arecanut plantation in the Kukkila area.

He was immediately shifted to the Government Hospital in Vittal for emergency treatment. As his condition was critical, he was later referred to Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru and subsequently shifted to a private hospital for advanced medical care.

Despite the efforts of doctors, Giriyappa failed to recover and passed away on Saturday, August 1. His death has cast a pall of gloom over the local community, where residents had hoped for his recovery after his dramatic rescue.
