SAC to hold workshop on ‘Nuclear Energy for a Better Society’

Mangalore, Dec 10, 2013: St Aloysius College, Mangalore in association with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai will be organizing “Nuclear Energy for a Better Society”, an awareness programme on the positive effects of nuclear energy at Eric Mathias hall, St Aloysius College, on December 12 and 13 at 9.30 a.m.

Speaking at the press meet held at Press Club on Dec 10, Tuesday, Rev. Fr. Swebert D’silva, Principal, St Aloysius College said that M Govindappa, Managing Director of MESCOM, will inaugurate the lecture workshop at 10.00 am on Thursday, December 12. Fr Denzil Lobo SJ, Rector of St Aloysius Institutions will preside over the function. The lecture workshops will also feature talks by eminent personalities in the field of Nuclear Energy, with the keynote address on "Nuclear energy as a source of energy" to be delivered Dr Sharad Kale, head of TT and CD at BARC, Mumbai.

Dr. S. F. D. Souza, Ex AD, BMG, BARC, Mumbai, Dr. U.M. Mahant Shetty, Department of Radiation Oncology, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, Dr. J.R. Bandekar, Head, Radiation Biology & Health Sciences Division, BARC, R.R. Sahaya, Additional Chief Engineer (CFD & FA) in the Directorate of Reactor Safety and Analysis, NPCIL and Dr. T.R. Ganapathi, Scientific Officer (G), Head, Plant Cell Culture Technology Section, BARC will also participate as the guest speakers. The lecture workshop will conclude with a panel discussion and interaction with the students.  

Posters will also be displayed on the campus by BARC on the various uses of nuclear energy. This lecture workshop seeks to elaborate on the various applications of nuclear energy in ensuring food and water security as well as healthcare. A series of competitions including quiz, debate and cartoon art on the theme of the lecture workshop will be conducted on December 13 from 9.30 am to 3.30 pm. The lecture workshop is open to faculty and students of PUC/Degree/ PG from physical and biological sciences and students will get an ample opportunity to interact with prominent scientists from BARC.
