Mangalore, Feb 4, 2012: The School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, organized a one-day, inter-departmental regional students’ seminar titled “Women – Emerging Issues” on Feb 3 Friday.
Students from several colleges presented papers related to the topic.
Delivering the inaugural address, Anand K, assistant vice president, Manipal Media Network, said that the social situation of women has changed in the 21st century in several countries. Stating that some countries still discriminate against women, it is now generally understood that women are just as competent as men.
Speaking about women’s position in India, he said that the country has successfully abolished social evils such as sati and devadasi, which denied basic rights for women. He also said that Indian women have proved that they can excel at anything they choose to do.
K. T. Shailaja Bhat, the president of the Zilla Panchayat, spoke on the occasion and said that women are now expected to balance their social and domestic roles. Lamenting on the portrayal of women in advertisements, she said that this has given the wrong message about women to modern youth. She even lauded women self-help groups for strengthening the economic conditions of women in rural areas.
Principal Dr. Sophia N. Fernandes and Convener Dr. Malini Mukund were also present.
