Raghupathi Bhat criticizes BJP’s "Godfather Culture" while running as independent candidate

Mangaluru, May 19, 2024: K. Raghupathi Bhat, a former three-term BJP MLA from Udupi and now an independent candidate for the legislative council election from the South West Graduates constituency, accused the BJP of adopting the "godfather culture" of the Congress.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Bhat stated that he did not seek to appease any senior BJP leaders to secure a party ticket for the MLC poll. "I am contesting and seeking votes based on my achievements. My candidacy might negatively impact the BJP, but I intend to return to the party after winning this election," he said, declining to disclose the specific reasons for his denial of a BJP ticket.

"I have no idea who worked behind the scenes to deny me a ticket for the MLC poll. Previously, the BJP selected candidates for MLA and MLC polls based on the opinions of party workers at the booth level, followed by discussions at the mandal and district levels. Now, even if a name is sent from the state, the final list differs. The godfather culture of the Congress has infiltrated our party. Only those who appease leaders get a ticket in the BJP. However, I have not appeased any leader. I believe in the support of party workers, and with this confidence, I am contesting the election," Bhat explained.

In response to a question, Bhat mentioned that no BJP leaders had contacted him since he decided to contest the MLC poll. "I have already requested all leaders to grant me the party’s Form B to contest the MLC poll from the South West Graduates constituency. I have informed them that I am also contesting as an independent candidate on behalf of the BJP. My ultimate aim is to make senior leaders aware of the injustice faced by honest party workers within the BJP," he said.

Former corporator Navindchandra and Dr. Shivasharan Shetty were also present at the press meet.
