Mangaluru, August 23, 2026: The Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has welcomed the Railway Board’s decision to merge the Mangaluru railway section, up to and including Ullal, with the Mysuru Division of South Western Railway (SWR). The administrative realignment, from the Palakkad Division of Southern Railway, will come into effect on October 1, 2026.
KCCI President P.B. Ahmed Mudassar said the move would strengthen Mangaluru’s rail connectivity with the rest of Karnataka and open up new opportunities for trade and commerce. Improved connectivity is expected to expand market access, boost freight movement and stimulate regional economic growth.

The Chamber noted that Mangaluru’s railway network had remained divided among three railway zones for decades, resulting in coordination issues and delays in approving new trains, service improvements and infrastructure projects.
KCCI credited passenger associations, civic groups and industry leaders for their sustained efforts to bring about the administrative change. It also expressed appreciation to Mangaluru MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta for pursuing the issue with the Railway Ministry and raising it in Parliament.
The Chamber thanked the Union Government and Railway Ministry for implementing the decision and said it looked forward to the official Gazette notification and working with the new railway administration.
