Mangaluru, October 14, 2026: Journalists have a moral responsibility to uphold the values and credibility of the media, particularly at a time when standards are eroding in political, educational, healthcare and religious sectors, said Dr M. Mohan Alva, president of Alva’s Education Foundation.
He was speaking after inaugurating the renovated Akshara Sabhangan at the Mangaluru Press Club, located at Patrika Bhavan, on Wednesday.

Dr Alva said the media had an important role in exposing social injustices and ensuring accountability among public representatives and government officials. Society could progress only when journalists upheld the principles and ethics of their profession, he added.
Former minister Krishna J. Palemar, who inaugurated the hall, said the media had made a significant contribution to Mangaluru’s development. Pro-people reporting that highlighted civic problems, road conditions and public grievances had helped give momentum to several development initiatives in the city.
He also cautioned against administrative decisions being taken without adequate understanding of issues such as building regulations, setbacks and road widening. Such decisions could lead to serious problems in the future, he said, urging the media to closely monitor urban planning and public safety issues and alert the public when necessary.
K. Ananda Shetty, founder-president of the Mangaluru Press Club, unveiled the nameplate of the renovated hall.
Press Club president P. B. Harish Rai presided over the programme.
Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists’ Association president Pushparaj B. N., Patrika Bhavan Trust president Annu Mangaluru and association state committee member Srinivas Nayak Indaje were among those present. Former association presidents B. Ravindra Shetty and Jagannath Shetty Bal also attended.
Press Club vice-president Muhammad Arif Padubidri welcomed the gathering, while general secretary Ibrahim Adkasthala proposed the vote of thanks. Satish Ira offered prayers, and Lokesh Rai compered the programme.
