Mangaluru: Hospitals fined for failing to renew health department registration

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, October 14, 2026: The Dakshina Kannada district administration has imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh each on KVG Dental College and Hospital in Sullia and Omega Hospital in Mangaluru for operating without renewing their registration under the Karnataka Private Medical Establishments (KPME) Act.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the KPME Registration and Grievance Redressal Authority chaired by Deputy Commissioner Darshan H.V.

KPME meeting

During the meeting, officials from KVG Dental College and Hospital informed the authorities that the institution had not renewed its KPME registration for the past three years due to pending documentation. While the hospital had obtained a certificate from the Fire and Emergency Services Department, it was yet to secure the required certificate from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board.

The Deputy Commissioner observed that the hospital’s continued operation without valid KPME registration for three years amounted to a violation of the Act. Accordingly, a fine of Rs 1 lakh was imposed under Section 19(1) of the KPME Act.

Similarly, Omega Hospital in Mangaluru had been operating without renewing its KPME registration for the past one-and-a-half years. The renewal remained pending as the hospital had not submitted the mandatory certificate from the Fire and Emergency Services Department.

Following discussions with the hospital’s representatives, the Deputy Commissioner ordered a fine of Rs 1 lakh and further legal action against the establishment under Section 19(1) of the Act.

The Deputy Commissioner also directed department officials to conduct an audit of all hospitals in Dakshina Kannada district to verify whether they had obtained the mandatory certificates from the Fire and Emergency Services Department and the required authorisation from the Pollution Control Board.

District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr H.R. Thimmaiah, Wenlock Hospital Superintendent Dr Shivaprakash, District Family Welfare Officer Dr Deepa Prabhu, senior paediatrician Dr Shantharam Baliga, Indian Medical Association president Dr Sadananda Poojary, paediatrician at K.S. Hegde Medical College and Hospital Dr Sandeep Rai, counsellor Rani Mangala, advocate Chandrah has and others attended the meeting.
