Mangaluru, August 23, 2026: Students of Government High School, Badaga Ekkaru, have launched a water conservation campaign titled “One recharge pit for every home – Our resolve to increase groundwater” to promote rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge.
The initiative, initially launched at the school level, is now being extended to the village, with students encouraging parents and residents to construct percolation pits at their homes and prevent rainwater from going to waste.

A water conservation awareness programme was organised for around 130 parents. The school, along with its Vanasiri Eco Club, also adopted a resolution promoting recharge pits and water conservation.
Students and teachers took a pledge to construct at least one recharge pit at their homes and serve as “water conservation ambassadors” by creating awareness among families and neighbours. Pamphlets and appeals were distributed among villagers, organisations and women’s self-help groups.
The school has also introduced a technology-based system to track participation. Students can upload details and photographs of recharge pits through a Google Form, after which certificates are automatically generated and emailed using the Certify’em add-on.
Students have been advised to construct pits with a minimum capacity of about one cubic metre, with larger pits recommended where space permits.
Headmistress Indira N Rao, Eco Club coordinator Winnie Nirmala D’Souza and the teaching staff are guiding the initiative. Mathematics teacher Ramya K trained students on using the online system and assisting villagers with submissions.
The campaign has also received responses beyond Karnataka, with participants from Kasaragod and Maharashtra joining the initiative and obtaining certificates, teachers said.
