Mangaluru, Aug 22, 2026: The Union Railway Ministry has ordered that the Mangaluru railway area, which is currently divided between Southern Railway and South Western Railway, be brought under the Mysuru Division of South Western Railway.
Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta shared the order issued by the Union Railway Ministry to the heads of South Western Railway, Southern Railway and Konkan Railway on Friday, expressing satisfaction that a long-pending demand of railway users in the region is finally being addressed.
Thokur station to remain under Konkan Railway
Under the new arrangement, the Mangaluru railway area up to and including Ullal will come under the Mysuru Division of South Western Railway. Accordingly, the interchange point between Southern Railway and South Western Railway, which is currently at Padil, will be shifted to Ullal.
Thokur railway station, however, will continue to remain under Konkan Railway, as it is currently. It will serve as the interchange point between Konkan Railway and South Western Railway, according to the order.
The move was considered necessary to facilitate railway development and the introduction of new train services in the coastal region. Several technical and administrative hurdles faced while the Mangaluru area was under the Palakkad Division are expected to be resolved following the change.
The shift is also expected to improve rail connectivity between Mangaluru and Mysuru and Bengaluru, facilitate the expansion of train services and accelerate infrastructure development in the Mangaluru region.
Chowta said the demand had been taken up as a priority shortly after he took oath as an MP in June 2024.
“Within days of taking oath as an MP in June 2024, we had taken up this demand of railway users as a key priority. Since then, we have continuously followed up on the issue and raised it several times with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. I recall with appreciation the active response and cooperation extended by him in taking forward this long-standing demand,” Chowta said.
He described the decision as a significant step for Mangaluru, saying it would reduce administrative hurdles between railway zones and improve coordination.
The move is expected to enable faster resolution of passenger-related issues and give greater priority to railway infrastructure and connectivity in coastal Karnataka. The official notification is expected to be issued shortly.
Chowta said the change would help address several railway-related issues in Mangaluru more effectively and accelerate railway development in the region.
To take effect from October 1
According to the Union Railway Ministry’s order, the administrative change bringing the Mangaluru railway area under the Mysuru Division of South Western Railway will officially come into effect from October 1.
With regard to the transfer of officers and staff, transfer orders for gazetted officers will be issued in accordance with the applicable rules. Non-gazetted employees will be given the option to either remain with Southern Railway or move to South Western Railway, while seniority will be determined based on their length of service.
