Pune blast suspect Abdul Samad Bhatkal gets bail

June 15, 2010: A Mumbai Sessions Court on Tuesday granted bail to Pune blast suspect Abdul Samad Bhatkal on a surety of Rs 25,000.

The Pune court granted bail to Samad after no material evidence was found to link him to the arms seizure case. All other accused in the case have got bail. So, on grounds of parity he was granted bail.

The court has asked Samad to give his address and mobile phone details to the investigating officer. He has also been told that he cannot leave the country without the court’s permission. His passport has to be deposited with the investigating officer.

The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad had arrested Abdul Samad Bhatkal from Mangalore. Acting on a tip off from intelligence agencies, Bhatkal was arrested Mangalore’s Bajpe airport shortly after he arrived from Dubai last month.

In August 2009, three persons were arrested from south Mumbai for possession of illegal firearms which, according to the ATS, were supplied by Abdul Samad.

The February 13 Pune German Bakery blast had left 17 people dead.
