Mangalore, May 8: The 100th anniversary celebration of the Mangalore Catholic Cooperative Bank Ltd was inaugurated at Milagres Jubilee Hall on May 8, Sunday by Oscar Fernandes, the general secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC). The 16 branch managers of the bank then lit 16 lamps from the main inaugural lamp lit by Oscar and Blossom Fernandes. 




In his inaugural address, Mr. Fernandes said that efforts will be made to make MCC bank as a scheduled bank if the shareholders agree, adding that the Reserve Bank of India’s support will be sought in this regard. Referring to banks that went bankrupt in American and other European countries, Oscar said that the tough banking policy in India protected the banks in India from such a fate.
Ronald Colaco, the NRI entrepreneur and philanthropist, launched the bank’s mobile scheme SWANT. He has contributed Rs. 10 lakh for SWANT, which enables at least 20 unemployed youth to take loans of Rs. 50,000 each from the game.
Dr. Edward Nazareth, the vice chairman of the bank, said in his keynote address that the management plans to expand the bank in other districts too. He said that schemes will be implemented to encourage more and more people to open savings accounts and that programmes such as Meet the Customer will be held to enhance relationships between management and customers.
The Holy Mass at 9:30 a.m. was celebrated by Dr. Henry D’Souza, the bishop of Bellary. Shobha Mendonca, the president of KEL Dubai, inaugurated the centenary deposit scheme.

Melwyn D’Cunha, the chairman of MCC Bank welcomed the gathering; Joseph Quadros proposed the vote of thanks; George Castelino Nakre was the MC of the event; and Nritya Vidushi Shaila Kamath presented a welcome dance.
