Opposition raises CDP issue during MCC meeting

Mangalore Today News

Mangalore, May 11: The general council meeting of the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) came to an abrupt end when the opposition created a row over the Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) on Monday. D. K. Ashok Kumar, a Congress leader, demanded clarification on the implementation of the CDP, adding that poor people are unable to construct houses on their lands. He wanted to know if relevant amendments had been done to the CDP to make it more citizen friendly.

Naveen D’Souza, another Congress member, said that the MCC fails to take stern action against huge commercial complexes that are constructed in violation of building norms. Without mentioning the name of the district-in-charge minister, he said that the minister has attended the opening ceremony of one such mall in Mangalore.

When BJP corporators picked a quarrel with Mariamma Thomas, who had also expressed her concern over the CD issue, the scene became ugly.

During the latter half of the meeting, the BJP continued their protest and shouted slogans against the BJP government and the MCC.

Mayor Rajani Dugganna said that the CDP issue was discussed with Suresh Kumar, the urban development minister. She assured that a circular regarding revision made to the CDP will be issued shortly. M. Shankar Bhat, the former mayor and senior BJP member, said that the opposition must stop protesting and discuss important issues related to water supply if they are truly concerned about the citizens.

The council has resolved to approve the leveling of 7 acres of land reserved for the construction of a new bus stand at Pumpwell at the cost of Rs 94 lakh. The council has also decided to seek legal advice regarding the construction of a 7m high vented dam at Thumbe, which might submerge 69.48 hectares of land. The meeting also resolved that compensation should be paid to the displaced villagers before collecting water in the new dam.
