New Delhi, Aug 23, 2013: People of Niddodi can at last heave a sigh of relief. Udupi-Chikmagalur MP Jayaprakash Hegde has assured that no thermal power project will come up at Niddodi.
The MP recently met Union Power Minister Jyothiraditya Scindhia and submitted a letter highlighting the opposition to the project in Niddodi and also the environmental impact of the project on Niddiodi and surrounding villages.
It is learnt, the minister has responded positively to the letter and sources said a meet would shortly be convened with the MPs, MLAs and ministers of Karnataka to discuss the issue.
Jayaprakash Hegde in his letter had drawn the attention of the minister towards the loss of large tracts of agricultural land in the village in the event of the setting up of the project and the irreparable damage it would cause to the eco system of the region as well as River Nandini.
The letter also pointed that a thermal plant is already operating within a 12 km radius from the proposed site for the plant at Niddodi and added that the project may not be sustainable.
The MP has also suggested that the proposed project may be shifted to some other suitable location.
