MLA Bhagirathi Murulya Seeks Permanent Measures to Tackle Elephant Menace in Dakshina Kannada

Mangaluru, August 30, 2026: Sullia MLA Bhagirathi Murulya has urged the Forest Department and district administration to take permanent measures to prevent elephants from entering agricultural fields and plantations in Dakshina Kannada.

Speaking at the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting chaired by Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta on Saturday, Murulya said frequent elephant incursions were adding to farmers’ difficulties, particularly those already affected by yellow leaf and leaf spot diseases in arecanut plantations.

She called for solar fencing along forest boundaries to prevent elephants from straying into farmlands.

Forest officials said a proposal to establish an elephant camp at Gundya had been submitted to the government and was awaiting approval. An Elephant Task Force comprising 25 personnel is currently operating in the district to drive elephants back into forests.

During 2026-27, ₹3.30 lakh has been released as compensation to 19 people for crop damage caused by elephants. However, compensation of ₹73 lakh is pending for 381 affected farmers.

Officials said around 80 elephants had been involved in crop damage in the Sullia and Belthangady areas. Farmers are being offered a 50% subsidy for installing solar fencing.

Deputy Commissioner Darshan H V said he would discuss the issue with the DCF and CCF and explore permanent solutions to the problem.

Feasibility Study Sought for Railway Station Near Mangaluru Airport

MP Capt Brijesh Chowta also directed railway officials to conduct a feasibility study for establishing a railway station near Mangaluru International Airport.

He suggested upgrading the existing Jokatte railway station or identifying a suitable location near the airport for a new station. He also stressed the need for a new Mangaluru North railway station.

Railway officials informed the meeting that a tender had been floated for establishing a stabling line at the Goods Shed area in Bunder.
