MAngalore, Feb 17: The 10th cruise ship of 2010 – 11 M. V. Clipper Odyssey called at New Mangalore Port last weekend. Of the 135 American tourists on board, 61 decided to take a tour of Mangalore before sailing off to Goa on the same day. Cruise traffic to the port has increased with 10 cruise ships calling at the port with a total of 4,929 tourists, 3,369 of who decided to take a tour of Mangalore and its surrounding regions.

One Feb 10, the port broke all records by handling 45,180 tons of coal in one day. Coal traffic has risen at NMPT during the past 6 years; and the port, which used to handle 3.15 lakh tons of coal in 2004 – 05 handled 27.9 lakh tons of coal in 2009 – 10.


On Sunday, the seventh main line container vessel from East Africa, called at the port and commenced operations of unloading 281 boxes of raw cashew, which will be distributed among various cashew processing units in Mangalore and its surrounding regions. When it sailed back on Monday, it took 132 TEUs of export containers of fish oil, fish meal, and granite, which is another record.


Besides, the New Mangalore Port handled five heavy consignments weighing 2000 tons for Bharathi Shipyard. On Feb 13, a giant project cargo from South Korea was brought in a special vessel called M. V. Dongbang Giant Number 3. This cargo was unloaded with the help of Roll on – Roll off technology by Ms Delta Infralogistics Mangalore. The steamer agents of this vessel were Ms Seastar Shipping Agencies.
