Mangalore, Oct 7, 2011: Speaking about the growth recorded in the handling of crude oil, LPG, and petroleum products during the first six months of this fiscal year, P. Tamilvanan, the chairman of the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), said it led to a 5.65 percent growth in the total traffic at NMP.
The port handled 16.04 million tons of cargo from April to September this year as against the 15.18 million tons it handled during the same period the previous fiscal year. A growth of 15.96 percent was recorded for the handling of crude oil alone during this period. Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. On the contrary, the port’s handling of export iron ore has reduced from 8.38 lakh tons last year to just 49,000 tons this year. Export of iron ore fines was paralyzed in July 2010 after the state government imposed a ban on its transport.
