Vikas Kumar, the superintendent of police in Chikmagalur, said that Kalandar was among a group of people, who had allegedly planned to steal cattle from the farm of Nagesh Gowda in Jenubailu near Gonibeedu in Mudigere at 3:00 a.m. on Saturday.

Mr. Gowda, who lodged a complaint at the Goonibeedu Police Station, said that he woke up early in the morning of Saturday when he heard dogs barking. When he peeped out of his window, he saw a white vehicle and a group of people trying to steal his cattle. He said that he fired seven or eight times from his barrel bridge loader gun, for which he has a license. The thieves immediately fled, he added.

Superintendent Vikas said that only one person in the gang was injured in this incident and that he had taken treatment at a government hospital in Belthangady, stating that he had had an “accident.”

The family of Kalander, however, has a different story to relate. They said that they got a phone call from an unknown number at 4:50 a.m., when they had just finished their meal, stating that Kalandar was shot and was in a critical condition.

One of his relatives said that some miscreants must have shot him at 3:30 a.m., and when the local people saw a bleeding man lying on the ground, they informed the police. The injured was taken to the Belthangady Government Hospital for emergency treatment by a 108 ambulance because the family desired it. The doctors in the government hospital later requested the family to shift the patient to a private hospital in Mangalore because he was in a critical condition.

Kalander is the eldest son of late Abdul Khadir and Nafeesa. His brother Thoufeeq works in the Gulf.
