Mumbai, June 28, 2026: A major tragedy was averted during a Muharram Ashura procession in Mumbai after police detained a man accused of distributing poisonous capsules to participants in the Byculla area on Friday.

The accused, identified as Fayyaz Premji, was apprehended after at least 11 people fell ill upon consuming the capsules, which were allegedly presented as painkillers and immunity boosters. The victims complained of stomach pain and vomiting and were rushed to a nearby hospital. Police said all of them are now out of danger.

Poisonous Capsules During Muharram

Deputy Commissioner of Police Jayant Meena said the capsules contained zinc phosphide, a highly toxic chemical commonly used in rat poison. The official added that the accused had no authorisation to distribute any medication.

Police seized around 14,900 capsules from Premji, while preliminary investigations indicate that a substantial number had already been distributed. Officials also recovered evidence showing that the accused had ordered 30,000 empty capsules and 50 kg of phosphorus.

According to police sources, Premji allegedly confessed during interrogation that he intended to poison thousands of people during the procession.

A local court has remanded the accused to two days of police custody as further investigations continue.
