US launches strikes on Iran after cargo ship attack in Strait of Hormuz

Mangalore Today News Network

Washington, Jun 27, 2026: The U.S. military carried out strikes against targets in Iran on Friday after Tehran allegedly attacked a commercial cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).

In a statement, CENTCOM said U.S. aircraft targeted Iranian missile and drone storage facilities, as well as coastal radar sites, in response to the reported attack on the commercial vessel.

Iranian media reported that a projectile struck the area around a pier in Sirik, a coastal town in southern Iran, on Friday.

Citing a military source, Iranian media also reported that warning shots had been fired earlier in the day at what were described as "violating vessels" in the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed it had targeted U.S. military positions in the region. However, it did not disclose the locations or provide details of the alleged strikes.

The IRGC statement came after the semi-official ISNA news agency briefly published a statement, attributed to the Revolutionary Guards, warning that Iran’s response to any fresh U.S. attack would be "swift and decisive." The report was later removed by the agency.

The developments mark a further escalation in tensions in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route.
