Mangaluru, January 26, 2026: The long-awaited Mahakalipadpu Railway Underbridge (RuB) was inaugurated on Sunday by Urban Development Minister Byrathi Suresh. Built under the Mangaluru Smart City project at a cost of Rs 50 crore, the underbridge is expected to serve as a key gateway to Mangaluru from Kerala and other southern regions.
Speaking at the inauguration, Minister Byrathi Suresh said the project, which was initiated in 2018 when UT Khader was Urban Development Minister, has now been completed. He added that it will play a significant role in easing traffic congestion and promoting development in the area. The minister also mentioned that additional works worth Rs 7 crore have been carried out at the site by the Urban Development Department.
Assuring continued financial support for long-pending development projects in Mangaluru, Suresh stated that the Urban Development Department remains committed to funding major initiatives.
He highlighted that the Siddaramaiah government has already released Rs 2,400 crore in grants to 12 city corporations across Karnataka. Under the Mahatma Gandhi Nagar Vikas Yojana, Rs 200 crore has been allocated to Mangaluru City Corporation for road development, construction of drains, and the provision of drinking water connections.
Suresh said that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has been invited to lay the foundation for these development works and is expected to visit the city soon to formally launch the projects.
District in-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao remarked that although Congress did not receive significant electoral support in Dakshina Kannada, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has frequently visited the district and inaugurated numerous development projects.
Several development initiatives are planned in Mangaluru in the coming months, including steps to boost the IT sector in the coastal district. The Deputy Commissioner has been instructed to identify land for IT parks, and preparations are underway for data centres and the launch of GCC offices.
Assembly Speaker UT Khader said the new connecting road would primarily benefit the residents of Ullal.
Urban Development Minister Byrathi Suresh also noted that six city corporations in the state, including Mangaluru, currently do not have elected representatives. He added that elections for all these corporations will be conducted within three months and that he has already discussed the matter with the Chief Minister.
