Mangaluru, January 8, 2026: The Bajpe police have arrested a man in connection with the suicide of a 20-year-old young woman in Gurupura. Preliminary investigations suggest that the victim took the extreme step after the accused allegedly refused to marry her, citing caste differences and neglecting her.
The arrested individual has been identified as Manoj, alias Murali Poojary, a resident of Malali (Manel) in Ganjimutt.
The Incident
The victim, Navya (20), a resident of Moodbidri, had been working at a local jewelry showroom for the past year. According to police sources, she went missing on Monday after meeting a friend and later jumped into the Gurupura river. Her tragic death has sparked significant discussion and concern across the district.
The Investigation and Allegations
The police recovered a death note at the scene, in which Navya explicitly named Manoj. Key details from the investigation include:
Relationship Background: Navya and Manoj reportedly became acquainted through Instagram a year ago. Their friendship eventually turned into a romantic relationship.
The Dispute: Family members allege that when Navya pressured Manoj for marriage, he began to distance himself and eventually refused, citing caste differences.
Mental Harassment: The victim’s family filed a formal complaint stating that Manoj not only rejected the marriage proposal but also used derogatory language regarding her caste and allegedly provoked her to end her life.
Police Action: Based on the complaint and the evidence found in the death note, the Bajpe police registered a case of abetment to suicide and subsequently arrested Manoj.
The police are currently conducting further investigations to gather more evidence regarding the mental harassment and the circumstances leading up to the incident.
