Mangaluru, Jun 19, 2026: A report has confirmed that water supplied by the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) in certain parts of the city is unfit for consumption.
More than 100 residents from Bijai New Road, Battagudda and surrounding areas have reportedly suffered from vomiting, diarrhoea and other health issues after consuming the contaminated water.
Residents, including children, have been falling ill frequently over the past month. Initially, water samples from local wells were tested and found to be unsafe for drinking. However, health problems persisted even after residents stopped using well water, particularly among children. Subsequent testing of tap water supplied by the MCC reportedly revealed contamination, rendering it unfit for consumption.
It is suspected that the contamination may have occurred due to damage to drinking water pipelines during recent excavation works. In several parts of the city, drinking water and sewage pipelines run parallel to each other, raising concerns that sewage may have seeped into the water supply system through damaged pipelines.
Reacting to the incident, Mangaluru South MLA D. Vedavyas Kamath strongly criticised the state government, blaming its negligence for the lapse. He alleged that the delay in conducting civic body elections has left officials functioning without adequate accountability or oversight.
Kamath urged the administration to immediately identify the source of the contamination and take urgent corrective measures to resolve the issue without further delay.
