Mangaluru: Police crack Rs 6.37 lakh gold theft case in 24 hours; worker arrested

Mangaluru, July 22, 2026: Mangaluru Rural Police arrested a construction worker within 24 hours in connection with the theft of 49 grams of gold jewellery and a gold-coated watch worth ₹6.37 lakh from a house under renovation.

The arrested accused has been identified as Zaheeruddin (24), a native of Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh, currently residing on Azizuddin Road in Mangaluru Port.

According to police, renovation work, including replacement of the roof of a rear room and installation of a false ceiling in the hall, was recently being carried out at a house in Bandottu, Maryhill, by a mason and his assistants. During the work, gold ornaments kept inside a small purse in a table drawer went missing.

The stolen items included a 20-gram gold bangle, 17-gram gold chain, 8-gram gold ring, 4-gram gold ring, and a Sonata gold-coated watch, with the total value estimated at ₹6.37 lakh.

Based on the complaint, Mangaluru Rural Police registered a case (Crime No. 68/2026) under Section 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched an investigation.

During the probe, police questioned all workers engaged at the house. The investigation led to Zaheeruddin, who confessed to stealing the gold jewellery and the watch.

Police recovered all the stolen gold ornaments and the watch from the accused. He was produced before the court, which remanded him to judicial custody.

The operation was carried out by a team led by Mangaluru Rural Police Inspector D.R. Manjappa, Police Sub-Inspector Arun Kumar D., and other station personnel.
