Mangaluru, Nov 11, 2025: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Mangaluru unit, staged a massive protest near the Clock Tower in the city condemning the alleged irregularities taking place at Mangalore University. Over 300 students from various colleges participated in the protest.
Once regarded as one of the most prosperous universities in the state a decade ago, Mangalore University is now in a deplorable condition. It is no exaggeration to say that the university, which should naturally have progressed over time, is instead heading steadily towards decline.

Despite having more than 30 postgraduate departments, four to five constituent colleges, several study centres, and research chairs, the university’s growth has stagnated. Departments in humanities such as Sociology, Journalism, Archaeology, and History have been shut down. Subjects like Tulu and Konkani have also faced neglect. Over 100 guest lecturers have reportedly not been paid for more than three months, and sanitation workers at the university have also been waiting for their wages for several months. Even retired employees are allegedly being denied pension benefits.
The primary reason behind this dire situation, ABVP alleged, is rampant corruption and administrative misuse of power within the university. It is disheartening that the university itself admitted to instances of corruption in a report submitted to the Karnataka State Higher Education Council.
Under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) scheme, the university received ₹20 crore between 2013 and 2017, of which ₹7 crore was earmarked for the construction of a student hostel. However, the hostel has not yet been built, and serious allegations have surfaced that the funds were misappropriated by officials. It has also come to light that false utilization certificates were submitted to the Higher Education Department.
Several past corruption cases — including the solar scam, fake bill scam, CCTV scam, lecture complex scam, international hostel scam, and Belapu campus scam — remain pending investigation, and no action has been taken against any of the culprits. Shockingly, some of the officials involved in these scams continue to hold key positions even today.
Given such circumstances, questions have arisen about whether development at the university is even possible.
Therefore, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad has urged the government to conduct a thorough investigation into all corruption cases at Mangalore University and to form a special committee to ensure the university’s overall development.
