Karnataka braces for heavy rain as IMD issues yellow alert in 25 districts

Mangalore Today News Network

Bengaluru, Apr 29, 2026: As summer heat intensifies across Karnataka, pre-monsoon activity has picked up significantly, bringing both relief and concern. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for 25 districts, including Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, forecasting widespread rainfall over the next five days.

In the last 32 hours, Hassan recorded the highest rainfall at 61.5 mm, while several other parts of the state also received showers, indicating stronger pre-monsoon conditions.

Yellow alert for Karnataka

In the coastal districts of Kasargod, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada, humid and cloudy weather is expected despite daytime sunshine. Thunder showers are likely by evening, especially in the Uttara Kannada-Belagavi-Dharwad border areas and the ghat foothill regions of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.

Due to wind pressure and rising temperatures, scattered rain is also expected in the remaining parts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada, with rainfall intensity likely to increase further from April 29.

In the Malnad region, Kodagu district is expected to receive normal evening thunder showers in some areas, while the coastal border regions of Hassan, Chikkamagaluru and Shivamogga may also witness evening rain accompanied by thunder. Scattered rainfall is expected in the remaining parts as well.

In north interior Karnataka, Belagavi, Dharwad, Haveri and Ballari districts are likely to receive thunder showers during evening and night hours. Other districts may also experience rainfall if wind pressure increases. Though heat is expected to continue in most south interior districts, thunder showers are forecast there from April 29 onward.

A yellow alert has been issued for 25 districts on April 29. Moderate rainfall is expected in Bidar, Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Belagavi and Uttara Kannada, while Bengaluru and several other districts will continue to remain under alert.

On April 30, the yellow alert will remain in force for 24 districts, with moderate rain likely in Bidar, Belagavi, Bagalkote, Uttara Kannada, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada.

On May 1, yellow alert will continue in 19 districts, with rainfall expected in Raichur, Koppal, Vijayanagara, Davanagere, Chitradurga, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Mysuru and Mandya, among others.

Rainfall figures from the last 32 hours showed Hassan at the top with 61.5 mm, followed by Yadgir (36 mm), Raichur (34 mm), Koppal (33.5 mm), Haveri (26 mm), Ballari (22 mm), Dakshina Kannada (21.5 mm), Tumakuru (21 mm), Vijayapura (18 mm), Chitradurga (15 mm) and Kalaburagi (14.5 mm).

In Bengaluru, light rain was reported in several areas, including Majestic and Corporation limits. A yellow alert has been issued for the city for the next four days, and residents have been advised to remain cautious.

While the active pre-monsoon showers have brought relief from the severe summer heat and are expected to benefit farmers, the weather department has warned of risks from thunder and lightning. People working in fields and plantations have been advised not to remain in open spaces during thunderstorms.

Officials have also cautioned motorists and pedestrians in urban areas, as heavy rain may cause waterlogging in low-lying areas. Overall, rainfall activity is expected to intensify across Karnataka by early May, signalling the state’s gradual approach toward the full monsoon season.
