Mangalore, Nov 21, 2012 : Prof. T. C. Shivashankar Murthy, vice chancellor of Mangalore University, inaugurated the silver jubilee of the Mangalore Diocesan Chair in Christianity, which was held in Milagres Hall Complex on Nov 21.
In his address, Prof. Murthy said that the Chair has achieved a lot by functioning for 25 years. Listing the Chair’s achievements, he said that, although there wasn’t any formal school in Mangalore, the Basil Mission began the first school in 1834. The mission also gave importance to healthcare. Congratulating the Chair, he also gave some good suggestions for improvement.
Dr. Aloysius P. D’Souza, bishop of Mangalore Diocese, said that, in the past 25 years, the Chair has organized over 200 programs and activities, including 101 lectures, 21 seminars, 74 symposia, and 20 workshops. Further speaking about the Christian contributions to education and healthcare, he said that Christian institutions have given Rs. 3.42 crore as fee concessions besides providing facilities such as hostels. Christian educational institutions are guided by the rule that education must not be denied to any poor student, he said.
Dr. Sr. Prem D’Souza, principal of St. Agnes College, proposed the vote of thanks, and Fr. Denis D’Sa, administrator of FMMC, was the MC.
Dr. Hannibal Cabral, principal of Karnataka Theological College (KTC); Dr. Victor Machado, parish priest of St. Francis Xavier Church in Bejai; Fr. Denis Moras Prabhu; Fr. Swebert D’Silva, principal of St. Aloysius College; and Fr. Joseph Martis, director of Jeppu Seminary, were also present.
